Is it a sin to get drunk?
Getting drunk means drinking enough alcohol to become intoxicated and lose normal judgment or self-control. People may do it for pleasure, socializing, or to escape stress.
We're now going to evaluate it using the following simple but effective test:
1. Does it glorify God?
No. Scripture explicitly warns against drunkenness and calls Christians to remain sober and self-controlled (Ephesians 5:18; 1 Peter 5:8).
2. Can I do this without being tempted to sin?
No. Getting drunk inherently involves impaired judgment and loss of self-control, which can lead to other sinful thoughts and actions.
3. Could I do this with Jesus Christ next to me?
No. Deliberately becoming intoxicated is inconsistent with the sobriety and self-control Scripture calls believers to practice.
So, yes, it is a sin to get drunk.
The Bible directly condemns drunkenness, while drinking alcohol itself is treated differently in Scripture. The sinful issue here is deliberately becoming intoxicated and surrendering self-control.
