Is it a sin to live together before marriage?

Living together before marriage means sharing a home and daily life as an unmarried couple, often for financial, practical, or relationship reasons.

We're now going to evaluate it using the following simple but effective test:

1. Does it glorify God?

No. While living together is not explicitly named as a sin, it commonly places an unmarried couple in a situation that conflicts with biblical sexual purity and honoring marriage (1 Thessalonians 4:3–5; Hebrews 13:4).

2. Can I do this without being tempted to sin?

No. Living together creates significant opportunities for sexual temptation and can make maintaining sexual purity before marriage much harder (1 Corinthians 6:18; 1 Thessalonians 5:22).

3. Could I do this with Jesus Christ next to me?

No. An unmarried couple sharing a home would reasonably involve circumstances that could compromise sexual purity, making it difficult to honestly say that the arrangement fully honors Christ.

So, yes, it is a sin to live together before marriage.

The Bible calls Christians to flee sexual immorality and reserve sexual intimacy for marriage. Even apart from sexual activity itself, deliberately creating an environment that strongly encourages sexual temptation is unwise and contrary to biblical purity.
