Is it a sin to practice yoga?
Yoga is a practice involving physical postures, breathing, and sometimes meditation. People commonly practice it for exercise, flexibility, relaxation, and mental well-being.
We're now going to evaluate it using the following simple but effective test:
1. Does it glorify God?
Depends. Practicing physical exercises and stretching can glorify God when done with gratitude and proper motives (1 Corinthians 10:31). However, participating in Hindu religious practices or meditation that directs worship toward other gods would conflict with biblical worship (Exodus 20:3–5).
2. Can I do this without being tempted to sin?
Yes. A Christian can practice yoga as physical exercise while avoiding religious rituals, mantras, and spiritual practices contrary to Christian faith.
3. Could I do this with Jesus Christ next to me?
Yes. If the practice is simply exercise and stretching, there is nothing inherently sinful about doing it in Christ's presence.
So, no, it is not a sin to practice yoga.
The physical exercise itself is not sinful; the concern is participating in religious practices that conflict with worship of God. A Christian should keep yoga focused on exercise rather than non-Christian worship or spirituality.
